What is caller ID spoofing?

Phone Calls ID spoofing is the forgery of the identification of a phone call. Allows you to call one person and have any phone number you wish to be on the phone people. Caller ID spoofing is bad news especially for children and adolescents who have come to rely on what they see when the phone rings and give private information over the phone thinking about his safety, when in reality it is very dangerous.

This is creating a marketplace for child predators to disguise or even create a family phone number and the word that a child trusts, leading to disaster. Parents should be aware that Caller ID is not fool proof and should not be relied upon. If a young man answering the phone lets you apply the rule that should not give confidential information such as codes of the door, never say “mom and dad are not home.” Make sure your children never to give information should call a foreigner and want to know any personal information even if the caller ID, police say, a utility company or your child’s school.

Here is an example of false caller ID works:

Caller ID can be used fake friends or used as a joke. For a predator, may even conceal himself to appear as a family member. Many of the caller ID spoofing services give ability to change the sound of your voice and even change a male voice in a male or female voice in the voice of man!

Today, something as simple as relying on the caller ID has become a method to harass and even torture to millions and there is no end in sight. Most victims of harassment report harassed by phone and Caller-ID technology has been used parody. Unfortunately, it is unclear whether cases involving the use of false caller ID had been prosecuted in the United States to date.

Alexis A. Moore, president and CEO of Survivors in Action and a cyber expert said: “Today, child predators have the tools they need at their fingertips and that our society continues to become more high-tech predator again much more sophisticated. ”

How can it be legal for a person to change their phone number and Caller ID? Well, it’s legal and datafurnishing industry selling our private information is legal, so the best thing we can all do for now until the passage of legislation and enforcement is to understand that there is caller ID spoofing and you need to protected until our outdated laws catch up.

The FTC should intervene as they did with spyware registry key this year, and end this business practice today! We need the response of the legislators of our country – no more excuses!

If you are a victim of cyberbullying are not alone! Survivors in Action works with families who are cyberstalked.

I founded Women’s Legal Resource in 2006 to help women who face the brutal challenges of the family law court system. After going through my own experience in the Family Law Court without the financial resources to obtain proper counsel, I was faced having to represent myself. All though I faced many legal hurdles, I felt the need to help other women and advocate specifically for those who are Domestic Violence Victims. Women’s Legal Resource is a nonpartisan organization that supports the efforts for Domestic Violence Reform and Family Law Reform. The present laws as they are written are flawed and do not meet the language of our ever growing savvy Hi-Tech protocol of the 21st Century, which places victims in danger.

Caller ID spoofing

September 7th, 2009

Caller ID spoofing is the practice of causing the telephone network to display a number on the recipient’s caller ID display which is not that of the actual originating station; the term is commonly used to describe situations in which the motivation is considered vicious by the speaker. Just as e-mail spoofing can make it appear that a message came from any e-mail address the sender chooses, caller ID spoofing can make a call appear to have come from any phone number the caller wishes. Because of the high trust people have tended to have in the caller ID system, spoofing can call the system’s value into question. More info click here!

Technology

Caller ID is spoofed through a variety of methods and different technology. The most popular ways of spoofing Caller ID are through the use of Voice over IP or PRI lines.

Another method of spoofing is that of emulating the Bell 202 FSK signal. This method, informally called orange boxing, uses software that generates the audio signal which is then coupled to the telephone line during the call. The object is to deceive the called party into thinking that there is an incoming call waiting call from the spoofed number, when in fact there is no new incoming call. This technique often also involves an accomplice who may provide a secondary voice to complete the illusion of a call-waiting call. Because the orange box cannot truly spoof incoming caller ID prior to answer and relies to a certain extent on the guile of the caller, it is considered as much a social engineering technique as a technical hack. Other methods include: switch access to the Signaling System 7 network; and social-engineering telephone company operators, who place calls for you from the desired phone number. Another method that is not used as often is VXML, which was gaining popularity before VoIP took over.

In the past, caller ID spoofing required an advanced knowledge of telephony equipment that could be quite expensive. However, with open source software (such as Asterisk PBX and almost any VOIP company), one can spoof calls with minimal costs and effort. More info click here!

Law

On June 27, 2007, the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation approved and submitted to the Senate calendar S.704, a bill that would make it a crime to spoof caller ID. Dubbed the “Truth in Caller ID Act of 2007″, the bill would outlaw causing “any caller identification service to transmit misleading or inaccurate caller identification information” via “any telecommunications service or IP-enabled voice service”.

Law enforcement is exempted from the rule. A similar bill, HR251, was introduced and passed in the House of Representatives. It had been referred to the same Senate committee that approved S.704. You should prevent and protect againtst fake caller idMore info click here!
